Riverview Educational Foundation's Commitments to the Riverview School District

"In my own philanthropy and business endeavors, I have seen the critical role that the arts play in stimulating creativity and in developing vital communities….the arts have a crucial impact on our economy and are an important catalyst for learning, discovery, and achievement in our country."

Paul G. Allen, Co-Founder, Microsoft

Commitment to: The Arts

The Arts programs at Riverview School District are led by an exceptional staff of working professionals and committed faculty members. Fine Arts is emphasized at the elementary level and beyond. From the earliest grade levels, the Music and Fine Arts courses are taught with sophisticated language and high expectations for all. The art curriculum inspires students to work with varied mediums and to understand the masters who changed the world with their timeless work. This seriousness is carried into the Junior and Senior High School art experience.

The Arts faculty at Riverview not only creates a vibrant classroom experience for students, many of the faculty are award-winners, experienced and recognized beyond the walls of the school.

Faculty member(s):

  • Have been recognized as one of 222 out of 7,000 nominees (quarterfinalist) by the Recording Academy and GRAMMY foundation Music Educator Awards.
  • Have earned one of twenty-five places in a summer institute through the National Endowment for the Humanities.
  • Have earned the Ruth Bergad Award which is given for the educator who finds a way to include issues of race, social justice, and historical moments into his music curriculum.
  • Are working/professional musicians, choreographers and artists.
  • Have secured material grants for the classroom.
  • Commit endless additional hours to the students and their artistic endeavors.

These are some of the exceptional notes about Arts education at Riverview. So why is it so important for us to raise funds for the arts? Fifty-one percent of Riverview students participate in musical instruction or theater.

There are:

  • 227 students in band
  • 139 students in musical
  • 116 students in orchestra
  • 92 students in chorus

And…

  • Sixty-four percent of kids who play instruments also play at least one sport.

Music and Fine Arts matter at Riverview. Athletes, scientists, mathematicians, writers, robotics, technology students and more—all of them participate in the arts in a multitude of ways. But with students coming from diverse economic backgrounds it’s imperative to build a symphony of instruments that can be used by students who have limited funds for purchasing or buying items. In addition, many students play multiple instruments and the cost of renting or buying can be prohibitive for any family. The costs associated with uniforms, art materials, instruments, trips to events, and opportunities to experience professional art outside of the school are steep and growing each year. Your donation will help enrich this already dynamic arts program.

Though research has shown that music education results in higher student achievement, Music and Fine Arts programs all over the country are in danger of being reduced or eliminated. Your donation will make an enormous difference for Riverview students as they seek to experience all levels and types of art at the school and beyond.
